語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の praecedere に由来する。prae（前に）と cedere（進む）が組み合わさり、「前に進む、先に行く」という意味を持つ。古フランス語の preceder を経て、中英語に取り入れられた。動詞 precede（先行する）の現在分詞形が形容詞として定着したものである。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

チャールズ・ダーウィンの『種の起源』(On the Origin of Species) では、先行する世代や種の特徴を論じる際に preceding が頻繁に用いられている。
