語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の sententia（意見、考え）に由来する。これはさらに sentīre（感じる、考える）から派生した語である。古フランス語を経て13世紀頃に英語に入り、当初は「意見」や「格言」の意味で使われていた。やがて「裁判の判決」という意味が加わり、さらに文法用語としての「文」という意味も持つようになった。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Charles Dickens の A Tale of Two Cities の冒頭 "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." は、英文学史上最も有名な sentence の一つとして知られている。
