前に、以前にという意味を持つ副詞・前置詞・接続詞。時間的に「～より前に」、空間的に「～の前に」、または順序として「～に先立って」という意味で使われます。複数の品詞として機能する非常に基本的な英単語です。

語源 / Etymology

古英語の beforan に由来し、**be-**（～のそばに）と foran（前方に）が組み合わさった語です。ゲルマン祖語の *bi-foranai にさかのぼり、「前方に、正面に」という空間的な意味から、時間的な「以前に」という意味へと発展しました。ドイツ語の bevor とも同じ語源を共有しています。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Charles Dickens の A Tale of Two Cities の冒頭近くで、過去と現在の対比を描く際に before が繰り返し用いられています。
William Shakespeare の Hamlet では、"I have heard / That guilty creatures sitting at a play / Have by the very cunning of the scene / Been struck so to the soul that presently / They have proclaimed their malefactions; / For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak / With most miraculous organ. I'll have these players / Play something like the murder of my father / Before mine uncle" という台詞で、空間的・対面的な意味で使われています。
Ernest Hemingway の The Old Man and the Sea でも、老人が過去の出来事を回想する場面で before が効果的に使われています。
