語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の gratus（喜ばしい、感謝すべき）に由来する。これが中世ラテン語で gratitudo となり、15世紀頃にフランス語を経て英語に取り入れられた。同じ語根から grace（恩寵）、grateful（感謝している）、gratis（無料の）なども生まれている。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Marcus Tullius Cicero — Pro Plancio の中で「Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others（感謝は最大の美徳であるだけでなく、他のすべての美徳の源である）」という有名な一節がある。
