語源 / Etymology

中英語の melwe（柔らかい、熟した）に由来し、古英語の melu（穀粉、meal）と関連がある。もともとは果実が十分に熟して柔らかくなった状態を指していた。そこから転じて、人の性格が穏やかであることや、音・色・味が柔らかく心地よいことを表すようになった。
